The policy of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is that children of unmarried parents be afforded the same rights and protections as children of married parents. Issues may arise concerning naming of a parent on a birth certificate, custody, parenting rights, child support, health insurance and life insurance as it pertains to children. Retroactive support may be sought as far back as the birth of a child of unmarried parents. It is never too early for the unmarried parents of children to seek professional legal advice concerning their rights and obligations, even before the birth of the child.
